My name is Mark Abbott. I am the founder, CEO, janitor and chief bottle washer of Heimili Yggdrasils, LLC. I know, the name is a mouthful. That is why I refer to the company as H.Y. Woodworks. A great deal easier to say and cheaper to print on stuff! The name has some personal meaning for me and conveys some of the reasons I am doing this.
Heimili Yggdrasils” is ancient Norse for “Home of the World Tree”. In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil was the World Tree – the tree that Earth was supported by and whose roots permeated the entire world, bringing life to everything. I am not saying our product is anywhere near that important – just that what I make it is meant to be from the heart, inspired by a deep sense of connectivity to life and what is around us all the time, and a sincere attempt to share that with you. That is why nothing I make is from a CNC machine or mass produced. If you buy something from HY Woodworks, I made it. I had my hands on it at every stage. It is from me to you, and though there may have been a pattern involved and others are super similar, it is unique by definition.
Ok, but who am I? My grandfather had a lifelong love of woodworking. He was never a professional, but from the time he started working in a lumber mill in Illinois as a young child, until the day he passed, he built things out of wood with a passion. My mother and my eldest aunt inherited this love and built everything from birdhouses to cedar chests their whole life. In the blood, I guess. None of my family ever tried to or sold anything they made to anyone and, I confess, I have a bit of a strange feeling about heading out in that direction with HY Woodworks. They built for the love of doing so and to make wonderful things for friends and family. I don’t want to lose that, but with offering my work for sale, I hope to earn enough to do one thing they always thought about – doing it every day.
Maybe that goal will be achieved and maybe it won’t. That’s not what really matters in the end. The whole effort, regardless, means I get to share my family passion with you! Thanks.
